Today we had the most fun, unique experience when we collaborated with our peers in Thompson, Manitoba, Canada. The students used iPads to connect to other small groups in Canada. We discussed questions that we could ask people about wolves to get input as to how they view them, or different perceptions that they have in our area. During the conversation we were able to show the students what our classroom looks like, and our school as well. They had fun showing us what it is like in their school. Isn't technology great? Students, what was your favorite part of our Skype session with our Canadian friends today?

Good Afternoon,
We have been working so hard on our stories to be published. Please, if you have not yet filled out the book order form, even if you DO NOT want an additional purchased copy, please sign it on the bottom and check no. I have to have all of these in so we can send in our manuscripts to be published. Thank you!
We have really great authors and illustrators here at Northeast Range. I can't wait to see the finished product.
Holiday break is approaching quickly. Remember our party is on Tuesday, December 20 in the afternoon. Bring a present for a boy or girl. Some students have also volunteered to bring punch or juice and if anyone has anything else they would like to bring in, feel free. I have two crafts/activities planned, but if someone else wants to volunteer to help out or do something let me know.
Spelling test tomorrow!
Have a great night!

Wolves Without Borders Guest!
If you are friends with the Northeast Range School on Facebook, you may have seen our class featured there. Tara Johnson from the International Wolf Center visited our classroom to discuss how wolves are portrayed in folktales. This is the start of our study on wolves--their behavior, perceptions, how they live and survive in our area and in other countries. We are going to have Tara visit again in January and some time this year we will travel to the wolf center to visit.
She also brought an adoption kit for us. We have adopted the wolf "Aiden" who lives in the main exhibit there at the Wolf Center. What a cool opportunity!

Math Flex Wednesday Fun!
We've been working hard to learn all of the math vocabulary that is specific to the different math strands we are studying this year: numbers and operation, algebra, geometry, and data analysis.
Yesterday we worked on learning algebra concepts. Here are some pictures from my group who worked hard to make posters and use the technology that we have in our school to practice math facts!

Ideas for our Wolves Without Borders Blog
Respond to this post with some ideas about what we could tell our friends in Canada and Mexico. It is great to see how our culture and theirs are different, so I will ask you this....
What is culture?
What is our culture here?
How can culture be different between places?
I'm excited to hear your responses! :)

December--already?? Where does the time go??
We have been really working hard to integrate technology into our classrooms. The Starboard has been a really awesome feature that I feel I just can't live without. It adds so much to what we can do in our room!
We have been working on our stories. Please, if you haven't already, sign and return the form to either order an additional copy of your student's published book or just check "no, not interested" to get just the free copy. I need them returned either way and I only have gotten a few back.
Our Flex Wednesday has been going very well. The kids seem really excited to try something new--and the teachers are as well! We really have developed into quite a community of learners. :)
We are doing mostly in class projects and reading, however, if you are in a book club or if you have guided reading homework make sure you get that completed.
Have a GREAT night!

Conferences
I just wanted to thank each and every one of you who came to conferences or scheduled one for a later time. It is really nice to get to know my student's families. I really enjoy all of my classes so it was really great to express what a good job I think you all are doing!
I want to apologise if anyone had to wait a long time to visit with us yesterday. With this new format it was a challenge to try to think of a way to fit everyone in. Apparently the format for yesterday's conferences wasn't ideal, so we are brainstorming ways to schedule all the conferences for all students next year, but still fit it into two nights.
Have a great weekend!

It's conference night again! If you can't make it tonight, please call or email to schedule another time. If you can't make it I can also just mail or send home the folder of information, whatever you prefer.
I look forward to visiting with all the families!
Here is a question that you may want to comment on....
When you read, what is your favorite strategy for remembering what you are reading?
Please leave a comment! :)
Reading 5: Remember your comic strip is due tomorrow.
It's a winter wonderland out there! I just got an email that they are going to start making snow at Giant's Ridge soon. They are hoping to be open the day after Thanksgiving! I am excited to go skiing this year.
Have a nice evening,

map making
What we did today in science was measuring our playground to make maps of it. It was very fun. We got to measure all of the equipment using yards or meters, and it took alot of teamwork to do it. The hardest thing to measure was the slide because one person had to get up on the slide and one person had to stand on the ground and hold the stick while the other person had to keep track of the length.
For homework we have math page 111 1-25 and we have spelling week 2 packet
Reading Grade 5: Because of Winn-Dixie Comic Book Page
Reading Grade 4: Guided Reading Assignments or Pirate Writing story
Reading Grade 6: Finish missing homework, work on rough draft of Author's Tea story
We had a good day today. I look forward to visiting with you at conferences tomorrow! There will be no times scheduled, just stop by and visit when you can between 3:30 and 7:00. If you need to schedule another time, please contact me. Email works the best, or you can call. :)

What an Exciting Day!
Good Afternoon!
Today we had the most exciting day! We spent the afternoon participating in two really AWESOME activities!
First, we are particpating in a project with the International Wolf Center in Ely, a school in Thompson, Manitoba, Canada, and a school in Mexico. We are studying wolves in our area and we will be learning and sharing our knowledge with these other classes. Throughout the year we will be spending time getting to know one another via technology we have in our classroom.
Today we met Ms. Gagne's class in Thompson via Skype. We were able to introduce ourselves and talk to one another FACE to FACE!! Isn't that cool? We learned that even though these kids live in Canada we have more in common than we thought! Next we will be setting up a time to meet our friends in Mexico and will have a chance to talk to them as well. As soon as we start sharing information on a blog site I will let you know the address so everyone can check out what we are doing!
Finally we spent time with our "Reading Buddies" today to celebrate fall. We worked together to count seeds and helped make paper mache pumpkins. Thank you Learning Readiness for inviting us to join you in these activities. I have been so impressed with my class and the leadership role they have all taken in working with these younger students.
Tomorrow we have a spelling test, we will also work in our guided reading groups again.
Grade 4 reading has a test on Charlotte's Web tomorrow and the 6th grade needs to have read the story and answered the questions on page 7. The 6th graders need to have written a letter to Mrs. Engman about any book that they have been reading and have it ready to turn in tomorrow.
Our Halloween party is on Monday. Remember to bring your suits and a towel for swimming in the afternoon. :)
Have a great night! See you tomorrow!

Science Projects and Leaf Rubbings!
Hello!
There are some exiting things happening here at school. I just gave the directions for the simple machine project and it's going to be fun! I will post the directions/options on the blog so you can see them. The students need to fill out a contract as to which project they are selecting and I am asking that a parent/guardian sign that they also agree that this is ok. These projects should be done mostly at home, and are due on Monday, October 24th.
We completed phase two of MAPS testing today. We have the math test left for tomorrow. Everyone has done really well and I am proud of each of my students!
For the last few weeks we have been going to visit the learning readiness kids at the end of the day on Thursdays to read with them. Our "reading buddies" have really grown attached to us and look forward to our visits. Today we made leaf rubbings. It was really fun to help them learn their colors. By reading to the younger students we can work on our fluency. It is a really great experience for everyone!
Have a great night...even though it's rainy.

Phase One----Complete!
We completed the reading portion of the NWEA Maps tests today. I am excited to say that the results were very good! I am excited to share with you the information during conferences. :)
Due to the testing, we did not switch classes as usual. There is work due for all three classes, but it is not due until Monday. It will not turn into "homework" until Friday if not complete.
Make sure you have a good night's sleep and eat a good breakfast every day. Tomorrow we will be taking the language arts test and Friday we will take the math portion. The results of these tests will help the teachers here at school know what the students need to know and how to teach them best. It is important that the students try their best on these tests.
Good luck Pony League football players tonight!!!

Good Afternoon!
Today we started the third week of our new spelling series. Tonight for homework we are going to follow our same routine and each student should bring home their words to sort. They need to have a parent or another adult sign their notebook that they have sorted their words again. They started sorting the words here at school and have two sorts finished for tomorrow.
Other assignments:
Science: Work in class on simple machines. Tomorrow we will continue with the same activities. If you would like to look at more about simple and compound machines at home, you may go to http://www.edheads.org/ and select "simple machines" for the activity.
Reading 4: Complete the "cause and effect" web for Charlotte's Web. We will continue with guided reading tomorrow, also.
Reading 5: We discussed connections to the story (either to self, to the world, or to another text). If you feel like it, a good way to improve comprehension is to discuss what happened so far in the story. Tell someone about it at home!
Reading 6: Read the three short stories about living in space. Identify the main ideas and supporting details. Write a summary of the three articles, outlining what you have learned.
Math: 2.2 in textbook and workbook
Geography: Maps (color coded)
Handwriting (due at the end of the week): p. 56-57
Enjoy this "summer" weather! I hope you are all able to go feel the sun on your face for a while!

Thursday, September 29
A whole month of school has almost passed, and next week is midterms already! Time sure does fly!
It's picture day tomorrow. Please make sure to send the picture envelopes with money included or pre-pay online.
Today the sixth grade used our new curriculum online service. If you want to check out the website it is www.my.hrw.com. You should have your password and login to use the service. I passed those out today.
The fourth grade went to a website offered by Scholastic to play a game related to Charlotte's Web. The address is http://www.scholastic.com/charlottesweb/perfectword.htm.
The fifth grade spent time getting to know the Learning Readiness students today. We are going to be "reading buddies." I was impressed with the interactions that the students shared!
Here are today's assignments and reminders:
Spelling: test tomorrow
Reading 5: Read Chapter 11 in Frindle and complete the question worksheet
Reading 4: no homework today

Back to School!!
Hello everyone!
It's that time of year again--getting ready to head back to school. I am excited for another great year at the NEW and IMPROVED Noetheast Range Elementary! I have been attending some great technology training at the brand new South Ridge School and I am very excited about how I can integrate the new technology in my teaching. Not only will we have a starboard, which is an interactive whiteboard, but we will have access to an ipad2. We will be using this technology to create movies, presentations, and learn using apps and other resources. We are very fortunate to have the opportunity to use this new technology to prepare this for the future.
You should have received my back to school letter and school supply list already. Our first full day of school will be on Wednesday, September 7. I hope to visit with you at the open house on Tuesday, September 6.
I will try to keep you updated with this blog as much as possible. If you would like up to date information follow me on Twitter @kengman2142.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
Best Wishes,
Mrs. Engman

Also, we are uploading pictures to the posterous website for our Wolves Without Borders project. Today we were able to view photos from other schools and comment and ask questions about them. Tomorrow we are going to be doing the same thing.
The Wolves Without Borders project is a project through the Wolf Center in Ely, MN. We are the only class in the United States involved in the project (GO BABBITT-EMBARRASS!) and there is a class from Manitoba, Canada and Mexico also involved. We are going to be studying wolves and having some lessons from Tara Johnson, a teacher at the Wolf Center, in our class. We will be doing a three month project on wolves and will share it with the other classes. It will be an excellent opportunity for our students to be involved in using new technology, and for them to connect with other students on our continent in a common way.
The website that we are connecting on is called http://www.wolveswithoutborder.posterous.com/. We are spending about two weeks getting to know eachother and we will be posting pictures that show what living in Babbitt or Embarrass is like and what school here is like. If you take pictures you may send them to this email. Just attach the pictures in your message. The address is:
wwbusa@gmail.com
or you can send them to
kengman@isd2142.k12.mn.us
I am really excited about this project! I was able to Skype with the principal from Manitoba and the 6th grade teacher last Friday. What an experience!

Tuesday, January 18
I hope everyone had a nice, long weekend. Can you believe all the snow we've had this year? Last week we went outside with Mrs. Pierce's science class to build snow shelters. I was very impressed at how great they turned out! This week we are going to do experiments with our shelters to see how much heat they really hold in.
Today's assignments:
Spelling: New list for week 18. There will be a pre-test tomorrow and a final test on Friday. The assignment was to do WS 72-73. The bonus words this week are equivalent and numerator.
Reading: I am assessing the students with the MONDO reading series again like I did in the beginning of the year. I am hoping to see some growth and hope to make some switches to reading groups when I'm done. The assignment was to work on the Textbook/Trade/Periodical/Magazine assignment and Compare/Contrast WS.
Language: Pronouns 1-2 (WS 33-34)
Math: WB p. 60
Science: SSW Questions
Have a good night!
Kelly

Hello!
We don't have much as far as homework today. I just wanted to get you up to date with what we've done so far this week.
Math: Study for the chapter 5 test (tomorrow). We went over the pretest together today.
Spelling: We played Spelling Baseball.
Reading: Word work and writing (rewrite paragraph)
Geography: Identify the countries of Europe and the major waterforms. These two sheets are going to be due on Monday. I have an atlas that the students may use in the room, otherwise they may use the internet to find resources.
