Thursday, December 18

Hello everyone!

The week is winding down and then it will be the holiday break! I know that everyone is getting excited to have some time off but you can still do some things at home so you are prepared for school to start in January:
Keep reading for reading counts
Practice multiplication facts

Also, work on your multiplication packet that is due next year (January 5, 2009!)

Tomorrow should be a fun day. I am looking forward to skiing. I have always been afraid to try it but I am feeling adventurous and I am going to take a lesson tomorrow.

Thank you to everyone that donated treats and juice for the party and to the parents that have donated their time to help with activities in the classroom. The students are lucky to have such nice and generous parents and family members!

Have a happy holiday and a great New Year!

Mrs. E.

Social Studies Project

Here are the directions for the Social Studies project due next Monday, December 1.

Native American House Project

We have been studying the Indians of North America in chapter 4 of our Social Studies book. We have learned about the cultures of several different Native American groups. Each group is different and depends on the animals and resources around them for food, shelter and their every day way of life. In this project we will study the types of homes that different Native Americans lived in. From the list below, choose one type of home/Native American group to research. After you choose the type of home you would like to research, you may choose one of two projects below. The project is worth 50 points and is due on Monday, December 1. If your project is not turned in on time you will lose points for late work. Be creative!

Adobe Apartments/ Pueblo

Longhouse/ Eastern Woodland Indians (Iroquois)

Tepee/ Plains Indians

Large Cedar Homes/ Northwest Coast Indians

Igloo/ Inuit

Project #1: Make a 3-D Model of One of the Homes

Using any materials that you choose, make a 3-D model of your home. You should research what the home looked like and look at pictures to make your model accurate. Be creative with your project!

Project #2: Poster of Your Home
Research what your home looked like and find facts and pictures of the type of house you picked. When you are done researching, create a poster that shows what the outside and inside of your house looks like. If you need poster board let me know. You should include facts about your house as well as the Native American group that you studied. Be creative and use the whole poster. Make it neat and error free.

We have started multiplying again in math. Today we started some timed tests and the students' goal is to finish 25 problems in 30 seconds! We had some students pass today at three minutes. One way to succeed is to practice facts at home. Make up "timed tests", create flashcards or use ones that you may have at home. Only a few minutes of work at home a day will make a big difference in learning those important multiplication and division facts!

Next week is Maps testing. As always it is important to try to get as much rest as possible at night and eat a good breakfast before school. This will help you do well on the tests and schoolwork.

Don't forget to send the permission slip for the music concert next Tuesday. I did get quite a few but not all of them!

Have a great night. I can't believe how the weeks fly by! Soon it will be October!!
