The Five Themes of Geography

1. Location—Every place on Earth has a location.
A. Relative Location—Position of a place in relation to other places.
Example: Mrs. Engman’s classroom is located down the hall from Mrs. Makkyla’s.
B. Absolute Location—Exact spot on Earth using Latitude and Longitude.
2. Place—Every place has unique features. Physical features may include plants, animals, weather, and type of land. Human features include people and culture.
3. Human Environment Interaction—how people interact with their surroundings. People can both adapt and /or change their environment.
4. Movement—People, goods and ideas move often. This movement is called spatial interaction. People move more because of transportation and increased needs .
Example: The Native Americans used to move to follow the buffalo.
5. Region—Area defined by common characteristics. Must be more than one characteristic.
Example: The region around Babbitt has lakes and woods.
Careers
1. Cartography—Career in geography that features people studying and making maps.
2. Topography—Career in geography that features people producing surface feature maps.
3. Meteorology—“The Weather Guy” This career in geography features studying the weather
