European Landmark Project

European Landmark Project

You will be working on researching a European Landmark. You may choose something that is of interest to you from the list below.

Landmark List
1. Big Ben, a historic bell in London in the Clock Tower of the House of Commons.

2. Eiffel Tower, a wrought-iron skeleton structure on the Champs de Mars, a former parade ground in Paris, France.

3. The Parthenon, a temple of ancient Greece that stood on the Acropolis of Athens. It was dedicated to Athena Parthenos (Athena the Maiden, or Virgin), patron goddess of Athens.

4. Stonehenge, a prehistoric ruin in southern England, near Salisbury. It is not known who built it, but it is thought to date back to about 2800 B.C.

5. St. Peter's, a basilica in Vatican City. (“Basilica” is a title of honor conferred on certain historic or privileged churches by the Roman Catholic Church.)

6. The Coliseum, Roman amphitheater

7. Tower of Pisa in Italy

8. Buckingham Palace, England

9. Cathedral of Notre Dame, France

10. Arc de Triomphe, a memorial built at the end of the Champs Elysees

Project Directions

This project will be research-based. The first part you will complete is the report. You will need to create a report about the history of the landmark. Specifically you need to gather information about when the landmark was built, who built it, what does it represent, and any other interesting information about it. We will have research time in class and once or twice in the computer lab. You will need to read through information to choose the most important parts and write down the facts on the fact sheets that I will provide to you. These sheets will need to be turned in separate from your report. You will need to include at least three different sources, one of which should be from a book.

Your report should have a title and be arranged in paragraphs. You will need to check for spelling and grammar before you hand it in. Your report should be typed and one page using a 12pt. font like “Times New Roman”. You may type your report at home, or if you don’t have access to a computer you may ask and I will set up a time for you to get to a computer to type it. These will be displayed in the hallway so it is important that your report is error free. Please have an adult or another student look over it for you as an editor.

The second part of your project will be the drawing or model of the particular landmark. You may be as creative as you wish if you decide to do a model of your landmark. If you decide to draw a picture of it, your picture needs to be detailed and in color. It also needs to be drawn on 81/2 x 11 inch paper (standard printer paper) which I will provide to you.

Both the report and picture or models are due on Wednesday, February 3. Please do your best and take your time.
